Meet the Creator

Hello there, 

It's lovely to meet you all! I am Tess Suh, and I am the designer and the creator of Ufulu Swim. I was born in South Korea but grew up in a tiny tropical island in the Pacific Ocean called Guam. And I became the person I am now through backpacking around the world for years.
The ocean and I are no strangers. We share so many great stories together. It knows its way to put me in the best mood. And my traveling made my love for the ocean bigger and bigger. That's when I promised myself to start a swimwear brand and spread this love.

It breaks my heart to see our oceans being destroyed by all these trashes created by us, so I am turning to sustainable swimwear using fabrics made of recycled trash. Creating Ufulu Swim is my way of saying "Earth, I care and I love you." 

Let's grow the awareness of environmental issues and support spreading the bikini culture in Korea together while having fun, enjoying life and looking good!

만나서 반갑습니다! 우풀루 스윔의 창립자 그리고 디자이너 Tess Suh라고 합니다.
저는 한국에서 태어나 태평양에 있는 괌이라는 아름다운 섬에서 자랐습니다. 그 뒤로 성인이 되어 몇 년 동안 세계여행을 하며 지금에 제가 탄생하였습니다.

제게 바다는 친한 친구 같은 존재입니다. 너무나도 많은 시간을 함께 보냈죠. 아무 말 없이 행복을 주고 위로가 되고 친구가 되어 주는 바다. 여행을 하면서 바다를 향한 사랑은 더더욱 커졌습니다. 그때 제 자신에게 약속 했죠. 꼭 나만의 수영복 브랜드를 만들어서 그 사랑을 전파하겠다고요. 

이런 바다들이 우리가 만든 쓰레기 때문에 아파하고 더러워 지고 있습니다. 그래서 저는 친환경을 생각하며 쓰레기들을 재활용하여 만든 재생 원단들로 수영복을 제조하고 있습니다. 우풀루 스윔을 창조한 건 지구를 향한 저의 사랑의 외침입니다. "지구야 사랑해." 

우풀루 커뮤니티가 되어 함께 재미있게 멋있게 인생을 즐기면서 환경문제에 대한 인식을 키우고 한국의 비키니 문화를 전파해요!

THE UFULU STORY

Ufulu means freedom in Chichewa language spoken in Malawi. And that's what swimwear conveys to me - FREEDOM. 

Let me tell you why.


We all have fond memories of travels, don't we? The warmth of the sun, the perfect waves to surf, the chase of the waterfalls, the fun scooter rides, the mouthwatering foods , the sleepless nights, the strangers that became friends. The memories that make you feel nostalgic. When I look back on my travels, I was the happiest and most comfortable in bikinis. And these were the moments when I felt most free and alive. 


Ufulu Swim is made to live that freedom.


We want you all to feel confident, beautiful and free. To live the fearless life you have always dreamt of. 


We want you to take a slice of freedom wherever you go.

우풀루 (Ufulu)는 아프리카 말라위에서 사용하는 치체와 (Chichewa) 언어로 자유를 뜻합니다. 제게 수영복은 자유를 뜻합니다.

그 이유를 말씀드릴게요.


우리 모두에게 잊지 못할 여행의 추억이 하나쯤은 있으시죠? 태양이 주는 따뜻함, 푸른 바다, 파도와 하나가 되는 서핑, 시원한 폭포, 달리는 스쿠터, 맛있는 음식, 잠 못 이루는 밤, 친구가 된 낯선 사람들. 그리움과 설렘을 일으키는 추억. 저는 이런 추억들을 떠올리면 가장 행복하고 편안했을 때가 비키니를 입고 있었을 때였습니다. 그리고 그때 제가 가장 자유롭고 살아 있다는 걸 느꼈습니다.  



우풀루 스윔은 이런 자유를 위해 만들어졌습니다. 


우리는 모두가 자신감 있고 아름답고 자유로워지기를 바랍니다. 항상 꿈꿔 왔던 삶을 살기를 응원합니다.

THE MISSION

There are two goals we aim high for: Body Positivity & Sustainability



Body Positivity

I was fortunate enough to travel around the world and see different cultures in different countries. Coming from South Korea, where it is conservative and the beauty standard is extremely high and unreal, I was shocked at first to see how casual and normal it is to wear swimwear in public in other countries.
I was inspired by this and started wearing bikinis with confidence. And you know what? It feels so darn amazing!


Our goal is to support, motivate, inspire and empower, not just women, but everybody to feel comfortable in their own skin. 

After all, what we wear is just another way of expressing ourselves. We shouldn't have to worry about what others think. 

We are beautiful in different ways.

We hope to spread the body positivity and normalise the bikini culture.

Sustainability


What's the use of these beautiful swimwear if there is no nature to play in?


Ufulu Swim is constantly on the lookout for better ways to reduce our environmental impact. To be more sustainable and ethical is an essential value for us from the start.

From materials, suppliers, factories and packaging- everything has an impact and we intend to continue making the best choices we can.

자기 몸 긍정주의 (Body Positivity)


보수적이고 미의 기준이 비현실적인 한국에서 태어났지만 운이 좋게 세계여행을 통해 다른 문화들을 접하고 생각을 넓혀 왔습니다. 수영복을 너무나 편히 부담 없이 입는 다른 나라를 보고 처음에는 충격을 받았습니다. 한국에서 수영복은 날씬하고 완벽한 몸매를 가진 자들이 입는 거라는 편견이 심해 남녀노소 수영복을 입은 모습이 처음에는 낯설었습니다.
하지만 이것에 영감을 받아 저도 자신 있게 비키니를 입기 시작했습니다. 그 뒤로는 누구에게도 구속받지 않고 당당하게 입고 다닙니다!


우리의 목표는 여성뿐만 아니라 모든 사람이 자신의 모습을 사랑하고 자신감을 느낄 수 있도록 응원하고 지원하고 영감을 주기를 바랍니다.

우리가 입는 것은 우리 자신을 표현하는 또 다른 방법일 뿐이니 다른 사람들의 눈치를 보며 그들이 어떻게 생각할지 걱정할 필요가 없습니다. 

우리는 각자의 모습 그대로 아름답습니다.


자기 몸을 사랑하는 긍정주의를 전파하고 수영복 문화를 정상화하기를 바랍니다.

우풀루에게 친환경은 필수적인 가치입니다. 우리는 환경에 미치는 영향을 줄일 수 있는 더 나은 방법을 지속적으로 찾고 있습니다.
